Corporations Spent $60 Million To Defeat Abdul El-Sayed In Michigan...And He Won Anyway

Huge defeat for the Democratic Establishment

I’ve had my eye on this race for months now, but even more so since the primaries at the end of June.

The left flank of the Democratic Party has been challenging the Party’s establishment, across the country this election cycle.

You could say it started last year, with the victory of Zohran Mamdani. Then it was followed by wins in New York City & Denver, by candidates backed by the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA).

After those victories in June, it seemed the Democratic Party leadership was put on notice. They responded by coalescing around Haley Stevens in the Michigan Senate race. She’s a current member of Congress & backed by Chuck Schumer.

Over $60 million in corporate PAC money flooded into this race to back Haley Stevens against her challenger, Abdul El-Sayed. El-Sayed ran hard against big money in politics, Medicare for all, & ending aid to Israel.

Naturally, AIPAC responded by dumping over $30 million dollars into this race on behalf of Haley Stevens. That’s the most they’ve ever sent on a Congressional primary election before.

Even though Abdul El-Sayed was outspent $60+ million dollars to $7 million dollars, he overcame that 10-1 spending deficit, and won the Michigan Senate primary election.

This is a massive defeat for the Democratic establishment, who pulled out every trick they could think of to defeat El-Sayed in this race.

As each victory for the left flank has emerged, they rhetoric goalpost keeps getting moved.

• 1st it was: You can’t win a major election - then Zohran Mamdani won

• Then it was: That was an isolated event, he had a great social media campaign - then 4 DSA endorsed members won Congressional primaries in June

• Then it was: Okay, you can win in deep blue areas, but that will never work in purple areas, or statewide - Now Abdul El-Sayed has won a purple state, statewide.

Now, I’m certain, the next goalpost narrative will be you can’t win a general election with these stances.

Make no mistake, this movement continues to evolve, and I don’t think that will be the last victory this cycle. Keep an eye out for the Wisconsin governor primary election next week. Another DSA candidate is the frontrunner in that race as well. Another statewide purple state race.

For me these results are simple, and they echo what we’ve been talking about in this newsletter for over a year now…

The status quo of the Democratic Party is not good enough, we need something more. We need a party that will actually fight back against the fascist regime in the White House.

The Democratic Party has been pathetic in that fight during Trump’s 2nd term, and the people are pissed. If the current elected Democrats will not step up and reflect the will of the voters, we will replace them.

Keep holding them accountable. Vote out the establishments politicians that refuse to fight for us.
