Personally, I want the Justices' to be nationally elected, with the ability to have only 2 10 year terms. That would be my ideal situation. I firmly believe these people need to be elected by us though.

Yes, but not two 10-year terms. That’s twenty fckn years. Look at what Roberts has done during his 20-year career. Additionally, justices should be elected by the people, not presidents.

I agree in part they should be appointed and ratified by Congress because the broader public doesn’t know enough about their court record, but I suggest after 4 years seek reaffirmation of appointment through election process until they reach their term limits

I agree that SCOTUS justices should be elected by the people, and they have to serve a shorter term than up to 20 years,I would say 10 years max.And they would be under strict codes of conduct. The idea that the people who hold the fate of billions in their hands should certainly be held to a higher standard of conduct and accountability.”For whom much is given, much more should be required”,and no more lifetime judicial appoints for ANY judge, and limits to their power and influence.Too many bad rulings have created a virtual hostage situation to millions of people that it takes insane effort to reverse. Also no more shadow dockets that only certain people can access,EVERY ruling has to be public knowledge.

Also,we should actually get a vote on their rulings, not just have to fight when they obviously get it WRONG. It sometimes can take years to finally get changes made to reverse obviously faulty rulings made to please a few wealthy donors or partisian actors who don't care how their whims can affect literally generations of our people, like the faulty and dangerous abortion bans,or to just cancel the votes of people based on skin color or race literally OVERNIGHT.These are only two situations that we should have a definite debate and say into.

I don't know about elected by us, if there is even a remote possibility we could end up with a tRump like person on the Supreme Court. Some voters are totally uninformed and vote by name recognition alone.

Term Limits: Yes

Elected by Us: Yes, Yes

Term limits are a no-brainer, but they don’t solve the whole problem. Judges should be elected, as you said, and not appointed by the president. For true separation of powers, the president and congress should have no say over the selection of judges.

Elect the Judges, and enact laws that will allow them to be impeached.

Jo's avatar

They can be impeached now but it takes 2/3 Congress to do it, just like the president.

A majority party who recalls a judge is likely to create a process of retaliation when in the minority. This kind of political retaliation will have grave consequences for the country.

I’d say the way republicans have been grooming and packing the courts for the past 50 years this is already happening and has been for a long time. The evidence is in the voting record of the Roberts court and their bastardization of the constitution. This court is as partisan and corrupt as they come.

I’m with you 100%, however with a clause that states when they use corruption as power, WE THE PEOPLE CAN VOTE THEM OUT BEFORE THEIR TERMS! If they start showing favoritism to a certain group, corporation, or president they need to be removed immediately.

Because we already know certain members of the current Supreme Court are committing tax fraud, bribery and obstruction of justice they need to be removed first and seize the assets to follow the money to their crimes.

I think an 8 year term with an opportunity for another 4 years if elected. No one should have a lifetime appointment. I loved Ruth Bader Ginsburg, but her lifetime tenure resulted in a huge loss to the Court and it’s only gotten worse since then.

I agree , she should have stepped down a lot sooner! Her decoys hurt us tremendously!!

I’m all for it ! Any cut off time is better than a lifetime for these corrupt SCJ.

SharonL's avatar

Needs to be no more than 8 to 10 years in total , bc after that is when shenanigan start.

Also elected in AND an independent ETHICS REVIEW BOARD‼️‼️‼️

I agree with term limits for Supreme Court justices. The current Supreme Court is so corrupt!

Rebelone's avatar

There should be term limits for congress and the senate too!

I also want to see strong ethics and actually follow the constitution, or be impeached and removed

Nationally elected. More justices. Half men half women. Ethnic diversity. 12 year terms. Most importantly must have stellar ethical leadership. Not above the law.

Excellent ideas, Juleejour!

Like 9 years (2 presidential election cycles plus 1); since my faith in judicial appointments is so low, I’d like to see them elected but only if we can do away with Citizens United and any corporate donations, and limiting donations so it doesn’t become the grift it is now.

I think the president should only be able to appoint people who work directly with him. FBI, DOJ, AG's, the FED, the CIA ... should all be promoted from within the agencies or elected by the people of each state & confirmed by Congress. I would think that changing the leadership of all the government agencies every 4 to 8 years is pretty disruptive. Every gov. Agency should have term limits unless they are reconfirmed by the agency & Congress. There should be a mandatory review of the head of every agency every 5 years by Congress or a randomly chosen civilian review board with the power to fire or impeach SC Judges or heads of agencies based on their performance. Plus no Senator or Congressman/woman should have the power to prevent conformation. Obama missed appointing numerous judges during his 8 years thanks to Mitch McConnel. This would be a whole different situation if that hadn't happened.

I certainly don’t believe they are currently being held accountable. It is time to look at all these options and find ways to get the courts back to being held accountable to the constitution and law created by the legislative branch. Currently, it feels they are puppets of the current administration.

This is good, the SCOTUS is the one group that should not be involved in unethical practices.

Their entire job descriptions rest in the being ethical, recognizing, alerting, and taking down anyone whose character is not based in honesty, and making that public with written sources.

It hits me in the gut that people so full of knowledge and historical factual data, would dare to be slippery. Total disrespect for citizens of US.
