Your reaction to this moment in time is going to determine whether or not Donald Trump stops in his tracks, or continues to push forward and continue to erode our rights.
It’s not alarmist in the least to say that we are in unprecedented times and I’m not the only person who feels this way.
Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker:
“What we’re talking about is authoritarianism. We could have talked about Pol Pot. We could have talked about authoritarians across history. I chose something I know very well.
I helped to build a Holocaust museum, and what I know is in the early days of the Nazi regime, they started slowly but surely taking away people’s rights.
And what we’re seeing now is the very same thing. They’ve gone into cities now with the military.
Think about that.
In your lifetime, have you ever seen anything like that? Where the president of the United States is sending military, or troops dressed as military, ice, and CBP in camouflage with automatic weapons, into our major cities?”
I know that sometimes it feels like maybe everyday life just keeps churning.
You keep having to go to work, you keep having to pay bills. It seems like nothing’s directly impacting you in this moment, but I promise you, this is how it always starts.
You attack people on the edges. You normalize little things, inch by inch by inch, until one day you wake up and they took in 20 steps, before you even realized that one was taken.
What are you supposed to do next?
I mean, that question is different for everyone.
Sometimes it’s as simple as just sharing information with your friends and family.
Speaking out online.
Sometimes it’s getting involved in the community
Calling representatives.
There’s boycotts that you can get involved in.
There’s so many different ways that you can make an impact.
But I promise you this.
The absolute only thing that you should not do is continue to be silent.
That is the one thing you cannot do.
