Today I wanted to bring you a story of someone actually calling out Donald Trump, which unfortunately, has become rare in this second term.
It’s no secret that everyone is looking around, wondering what’s going to happen next in Trump’s America. And while we all don’t know what will happen next, it is also uncomfortable to acknowledge just how little our “opposition party” has raised their voices to condemn the actions of the President.
President Obama recently broke his silence in a podcast interview, and I thought you’d be interested in what he had to say.
Before we jump into his quote, I would like to say thank you to everyone over the past month who has been signing up to support our work here on Substack.

President Obama:
“We have blown through, just in the last six months, a whole range of not simply assumptions, but rules and laws and practices.
That were put in place to ensure that nobody’s above the law and that we don’t use the federal government to simply reward our friends and punish our enemies.
And the same thing’s obviously happening in the Justice Department. So people are right to be concerned.
The interesting thing, And what I’ve been trying to do when I’ve been speaking about this publicly is just to remind folks, you know, just as was true during the McCarthy era and has been true throughout our history, what’s required in these situations is a few folks standing up and giving courage to other folks.
And then more people stand up and kind of go like, yeah, no, that’s not who we are.
That’s not our idea of America.
We don’t want masked folks with rifles and machine guns patrolling our streets.”
Did you agree with President Obama’s take here?
Let me know in the comments below.
Honestly, his reaction here is just way too nonchalant for me.
He is openly acknowledging that Donald Trump is flagrantly and repeatedly violating the law, that he’s using the Justice Department to go after his enemies, and using the power of the federal government to reward his friends.
He says all of that, and yet he’s saying it in a very subdued manner like, man, you know, this really isn’t a good look.
You know, this really isn’t the best thing.
To his credit, I appreciate him telling people that we need more people speaking up about this.
But even at the end there, when he was saying that, it was very nonchalant, very laid back.
His reaction is emblematic of what we’re seeing with the Democratic Party at large, which is too many of these people kind of being like –
Yeah, this is bad.
But the reaction feels very muted and disproportionate to the crisis on the ground.
I understand there’s only so much anyone can do in this moment, but the one thing that we all have, is our voice.
The ability to raise hell, and scream about the injustices’ we are witnessing.
Democratic politicians, past and present, also have that ability and a massive platform. Yet, very few of them are willing to use it, and many have a very “business as usual” demeanor to their delivery.
Is it too much to ask that our “opposition party” reflect the will or their constituents, and raise hell like we all want them to?
I just find myself annoyed at the lack of adequate leadership, at a time where we desperately need it the most.
I appreciate President Obama speaking up, but the truth is, we need more than that.
I hope someone will step up and be the leader we deserve.
Until next time,
Desmond
I know some people get annoyed with me when I criticize Democrats, but it’s honestly because I desperately want us to have better leadership.
And in the bottom of my heart, I do not believe that better leadership will arise, by not criticizing these people.
On the contrary, I believe they will remain inept and ineffective, if they are not given the proper motivation to change.
In a lot of cases, I believe these Democratic representatives need to be replaced entirely.
Staying silent only helps the status quo & I wholeheartedly believe we need to demand better representation.
