Supreme Court Might Strike Down Trump Tariffs As "Illegal"
Plus, a few stories you may have missed
Supreme Court justices across the ideological spectrum pressed the limits of President Donald Trump’s tariff powers during arguments over his use of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act to levy duties on a broad range of imports.
Chief Justice John Roberts said, “The justification is being used for power to impose tariffs on any product from any country in any amount, for any length of time,” Roberts said. Justice Neil Gorsuch asked, “What would prohibit Congress from just abdicating all responsibility to regulate foreign commerce?” Gorsuch said.
The administration, through Solicitor General D. John Sauer, argued the duties are regulatory tools rather than revenue measures, while businesses and states countered that Congress alone controls taxation and never authorized such sweeping tariff authority under the 1977 law.
Justice Sonia Sotomayor responded to the government’s framing: “You want to say that tariffs are not taxes but that’s exactly what they are.”
The outcome could shape both executive authority in foreign trade and the fate of revenue already collected. Analysts estimate tens of billions have been paid, with disputes over possible refunds and the administration signaling it would pivot to other statutes if needed.
As the justices weighed whether to curb or uphold the program, they noted the practical stakes alongside the constitutional ones, with Roberts and others indicating the court could move faster than usual given the scope of the case.Source - Yahoo
Are we finally going to see the Supreme Court issue a ruling that challenges the Trump regime?
That’s a question that I’ve been wondering all day, after coming across this news. After seeing a couple Republicans cross the aisle to vote with Democrats in the Senate to reverse his tariffs, it’s starting to seem as though more people are willing to cross the tyrant and chief.
Time will tell if the Supreme Court will overrule the tariffs, but I hope they do. We could all use the relief from this idiotic trade war Trump started.
Do you think Trump will listen if the Supreme Court tells him to reverse the tariffs?
Now it’s time to catch up on a few stories you might have missed yesterday.
