It feels weird to look to the future, given the fact that our present seems so uncertain every day. but I do believe it’s important to envision what life looks life after Trump. That is what we’re all working towards…a time where he & his regime, no longer operate the power centers of this country.

In this potential future, we have to ask ourselves, what do we want to accomplish & how will these things get done?

To answer the first part of that question, I asked dozens of people who follow my account on Instagram that very thing a year ago. After compiling that list, I posted the best ideas in this post.

This is what Project 2029 should look like.

Now that we’re on this subject, I think we should go back and revise this list, or simply expand on what we started last year.

After answering what’s next, or what we’re fighting for, there’s also the question of how things get enacted into law. That’s where the discussion of the filibuster comes in.

In this sit down interview with Brian Tyler Cohen, President Obama lays out his thoughts on the filibuster. For those of you who didn’t listen to the video, here’s a portion of what he said:

“Which was the filibuster. In the Senate, the Senate is already structurally skewed and anti-majoritarian.

Whether it’s trying to pass civil rights legislation in the 60’s, or trying to get gun control legislation, even though majority people support it.

Delaware, Wyoming, have the same number of senators as California.

You then compound that with a filibuster. The truth is, is that Democrats for some time have been traditionalists in wanting to preserve that.

When it blocks us from making government effective, which in turn makes people feel like government is corrupt and not caring about them.

Which lends itself to the Republicans.

It gives folks like Trump an opening.”

What he’s effectively trying to say is that the country recognizes that there are problems everywhere, & these problems cannot be addressed with the Senate acting as a barrier to progress.

The Senate is already an un-democratic institution with how it’s setup, and combing that with the filibuster, it’s led us to a place where Government never gets anything accomplished.

Now, given the current political climate, you may be thinking to yourself - I’m glad the filibuster does exist, could you imagine what would happen if the Republicans had no guardrails at all?

That’s a fair thought. I’m terrified to think how much worse it could be, but the question still remains, should the filibuster be abolished?

My answer — Yes. Yes, it should.

Again, it’s hard to imagine life after Trump right now, so I understand of people look at this issue through the lens of what’s happening today, and how the GOP would wield that power.

But I’m imaging what will happen next, after that man finally leaves the White House for the final time.

I want this country to pass universal healthcare, clean energy legislation, universal automatic voting, restoring Roe, overturning citizen united, raising the national minimum wage & having it raise annual tied to inflation, the list goes on.

None of these things will ever be accomplished with the filibuster intact, because it’s an almost certainty that the Republicans will block any of those things.

The filibuster is the ultimate tool to inhabit progress & it needs to abolished.

When a horde of Democrats start lining up next year to begin the campaign’s for Presidency, it will definitely be one of the major asks for me.

It feels like every major issue we truly want, needs the abolition of the filibuster, in order for it to stand a chance.
